OCR: White Sands The White Sands desert undulates across 4,000 square miles of South-Western New Mexico. Its powdery white dunes are the largest surface deposit of gypsum in the world. In 1942 the U.S. military designated White Sands Proving Grounds as a weapons testing site, and on July 1 6th 1945 exploded the world's first atomic bomb, shattering windows 120 miles away in Silver City. The location of the blast, Trinity Site, was off-limits until 1953 due to dangerously high levels of radiation. But it is now open to the public for two days per year: the first Saturdays of April and October. At the end of World War Two, the United States enlarged the area designated for military use displacing the local population and claiming more than 2.5 million acres of tall grassland.
