Its powdery white dunes are the largest surface deposit of gypsum in the world. In 1942 the U.S. military designated White Sands Proving Grounds as a weapons testing site, and on July 1 6th 1945 exploded the world's first atomic bomb, shattering windows 120 miles away in Silver City. The location of the blast, Trinity Site, was off-limits until 1953 due to dangerously high levels of radiation. But it is now open to the public for two days per year: the first Saturdays of April and October.
